Just North UCC and First Unitarian Universalist of Columbus are co-sponsoring a concert to benefit a Honduran family of four living at Just North while they pursue asylum. The parents (“Juan” and “Maria”), with one small child at the time, walked for 15 months from Honduras to the US-Mexican border, where they were briefly “caged” with their toddler. Shortly after, “Maria” gave birth to their youngest child, then the family traveled by bus to Columbus, where they are living at Just North as they pursue a very strong case for asylum in the US.

Here is their story:

SIRENS is formed around the duo of Kay Harris and Molly Pauken, two of Ohio’s most sought after studio and live-performance musicians. Sirens music is all about the unique melody, the expression through lyric & voice and the texture of acoustic guitar & bass coming together to create unique but timeless pop songs. Their original compositions range stylistically from pop to acoustic rock to blues to funk to folk to create Sirens’ own unique sound.

Joining Kay and Molly are Pete Cary on guitar, bass and vocals, and Jeff Peters on drums.

Kay Harris has been an integral part of the Central Ohio music scene for a number of years. As a vocalist and songwriter for most of her life, she has been involved with numerous albums and also has provided lead and backup vocals for over seventy local and national jingles. Having performed throughout the U.S., she is one of the region’s most powerful, enduring vocalists and songwriters

Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Molly Pauken plays guitar, bass, drums and mandolin in a number of Columbus-based bands, including McGuffey Lane, John Schwab, Jonalee White, The Ladies of Longford, Hilda Doyle and various other area artists. She has also toured nationally and internationally with legendary songwriter Rodney Crowell.

Kay and Molly have appeared on Songs at the Center.

“We’re pleased to be working with our partner, First UU Church of Columbus,” says Just North UCC Pastor Eric Williams. “We are at an unprecedented crossroads in the nation’s history. Believing that the weaponization of race, religion and ethnicity were a part of the past we are stunned by the humanitarian abuse of families and children at our southern border. By insuring that this family can be safely and legally integrated onto a path of economic independence and citizenship we are all, together, setting an example of the justice and liberty on which this nation was founded.”
