This winter we are reading “Unbowed” by Wangari Maathia, a memoir by 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner from Kenya. Wangari writes: “Writing a memoir was like walking down my journey through life of some sixty years. It brought up many memories and reflections of past and current events, relationships, friendships, and collaborations, as well as times of great difficulty and great joy. Along the journey I never walked alone.” She is noted for empowering rural women to make a difference in their country and the environment with the founding of the Green Belt Movement, a grassroots organization in 1977. It led to the planting of 51 million trees in Kenya and began the restoration of
watersheds of Kenya rivers which had changed dramatically in her life.
Through reading and conversation we come to know an inspiring woman and each other better. We read a
chapter a week of the book and use it as the starting point for our conversation. All are welcome. The book
is available in paperback both new and used and e-book through many sellers. The Columbus Metropolitan Library also has copies.
