People are suffering. People are dying. There is fear and uncertainty all around. We are disconnected from our communities; our work is disrupted and everything around us has changed. It seems like chaos reigns.
Where is God in all of this?
I know I don’t have the answers. But here is what I have to hold onto:
If I become quiet and listen carefully, I hear Her voice whispering words of comfort and encouragement in my ear.
If I look, I see the face of God in the nurse who shows up for an extra shift, working outside her own job, to care for frightened elderly patients.
I feel God’s touch in the doctor who touches my arm and says “thank you.”
I hear God’s voice in the confused wife, suddenly clear, who tells her dying husband “I love you. I’m with you.”
If I am willing to open to it, I can find God. In music shared by neighbors. In the sunshine and the singing birds. In a smile between strangers that can’t be fully hidden by masks. In the nourishing warmth of a meal prepared by loving hands.
Tonight, I will light a candle and see if I can catch a glimpse of God’s promise of hope in the flickering of the flame.
May you feel the comfort of God’s love holding you today.
Amen
