I was asked to write a blog about what keeps me going. My first reaction was, “I have no idea.” I sat down and did a map of all my roles: wife, mom, teacher, crafter, citizen, friend, accountant, mathematician… I could list more but those are off the top of my head. After listing each of my parts, I brainstormed what keeps me going in each category. Here are the highlights.
In the most important parts of my life, Jim Baker’s love keeps me going. He is a supportive husband and amazing father. He has taught me so much. He has truly changed me for the better. Jim makes me get out of bed when I am depressed. He encourages me to go out with friends when I do not feel like it. Countless times, I have heard, “You’ll have fun once you get there.” Jim Baker is my cheerleader and my critic at the same time.
Love for my children keeps me going. I will never give up on my children. At times, I have to let go of the picture I have in my head and let them choose their own paths. Whatever path they choose, my love for them will keep me behind them, encouraging them, and correcting them. My children also challenge me to be a better person. They do not know it but because of them, I never stop trying to improve myself.
Providing health insurance and money for my family keeps me going. My job as an accountant is not rewarding, and does not contribute to society in any way. However, the benefits are extraordinary and the money is (mostly) enough.
My friends keep me going. I am not always an attentive friend. I tend to get wrapped up in my own self- pity and depression. They do not give up on me. They keep reaching out even when I do not answer. They offer to take my children, craft with me, have a beer, watch a movie, share a meal, and play a game. I do not think they realize how much these little things lift me up.
My church family keeps me going. There is so much bad news and horrific things happening in the world. North Church is a shelter from the storm. It is a place where people share hope. Hope for our communities, country and future. We work toward a shared vision of a future where all people are treated with respect, dignity and kindness.
These are the things that keep me going.
What about you? What keeps you going?
